Over the past few years, many persons have tried to come up with ideas to make weddings a little less ‘regular’ and a little more original. From wearing different colour dresses, to getting married away from home, several trends have emerged. The latest of these is “Wreck the Dress”. Here, we will detail for you what exactly this is, what is symbolises and how this trend can best be applied in Barbados.
What is it?
Wreck the dress or trash the dress as it is sometimes referred to, first originated in Las Vegas about 12 years ago. It is essentially the bride, after her wedding ceremony, deliberately and intentionally ruining her gown with all types of things they would usually freak out over if they had been on the dress prior to the ceremony. Then, the photographer captures the bride and her gown in the newly ‘wrecked’ state. It creates a lasting impression of the wedding day and makes the photos of the wedding different and original.
However, it is more than just another photography gimmick. Essentially it symbolises commitment to the spouse because the dress can never be worn again (and the idea is if the dress can never be worn again, the bride can never get married again, or at least, that’s the theory). There are so many ways that persons wreck their dress and these include burning it, ripping it to shreds and getting it wet in muddy and murky water. However, grooms are catching on with this newest fad and are often a part of the photos with their new bride.
How to do it in Barbados?
Barbados may not have waterfalls and streams which tend to be popular spots to trash the dress, however, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t cool ways to wreck the dress here, especially after a destination wedding. Below are seven ways you can wreck the dress in Barbados, and have tons of fun while doing it.
1) Engage in a game of paintball
This will make the dress all the more colourful and is a great way to spend the post reception period with friends and family. Definitely the most fun and colourful way to engage in this trend in Barbados.
2) Take a stroll on the beach in the wet sand
Barbados is well known for its beautiful white and sandy beaches.
However, the beach is an ideal place to wreck your wedding dress, whether you have had a traditional church wedding or a beach wedding. You and your hubby can take a nice walk along the shore or just lie close to the shore as the water and the sand covers you both, making for a great photo op. If you are really adventurous, you can take a dip in the water as well
3) Get muddy
If you visit the island during the rainy season, it will be that much easier to find a place – any place to find some mud and simply put, roll around in it. However, for those with an adventurous spirit, you can try the many Island Safari off road tours available on the island on a muddy and rainy day with your new hubby and/or those who wish to tag along for the experience.
4) Go snorkelling
One of the major attractions to Barbados is the opportunity for several underwater journeys and adventurers, both dry and wet. However, for this occasion, you should definitely get wet. While you generally stay above water when you are on the shoreline, snorkelling will wreck the dress and allow for the most romantic underwater photo shoots because if you’re lucky, the background of coral and sea life will make the photos much more amazing and romantic.
5) Cake fight at the wedding reception
Why even leave the reception to go anywhere else when you can wreck the dress, have tons of fun with those who want to get involved, and probably not wait forever to sample your own wedding cake when you can just…wear it on the dress? Just ensure that the location you choose to have the reception is conducive to the activity and you are good to go
6) Wear Red Wine
This can probably replace or go hand in hand with the traditional toast from the groom on behalf of himself and his new bride. But, if you still want the elegant wedding photos before the dress is wrecked, you guys can “toast” with the red wine later, specifically for the camera
7) Go on a Cave Adventure
Barbados has 3 very popular caves, as well as a few lesser known ones and these are good locations to wreck the dress. Animal Flower Cave is probably the best bet as you can also swim in the pools in the area. With the stunning beauty of the caves around, it will be a fantastic photo opportunity as well and the perfect contrast of the elegant, soon to be wrecked, wedding dress and the rugged natural surroundings of the cave.
Therefore there are plenty of locations where this new fad can be tested across the island. Choose the ideal location suited to you and your groom and make it an even more memorable day by taking some great photos in your newly wrecked attire.
