Top Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Barbados

We usually have sunshine all year round but there are some days, specifically during the summer months that it rains. But the beauty of Caribbean life is that there is always something to do, as the older generation would say, “rain fall, sun shine!”

  • Harrison’s Cave

Tour this lovely and eye catching limestone cavern via an electric tram that takes you 160 feet below the surface. While the rain may be pouring outside, you can enjoy some beautiful sites of the stalagmites and stalactites.

  • Mount Gay Rum Distillery

Mount Gay Rum Distillery offers tours on a weekly basis educating its visitors about their product and its history. Even if you don’t care about the history of the product, there are many tasting opportunities on this tour, almost certain to wet those taste buds on an even wetter day.

  • Surfing

Waves are usually ideal for surfing on rainy days. If you have always wanted to learn to surf, why not try it on a rainy day? You can either learn with the various surf schools around the island or, if you already know how to surf you can rally up some friends and catch some waves on a rainy day.

  • St. Nicholas Abbey

Take a tour of this great Jacobean mansion as well as the rum and sugar distillery and the steam mill. It is your choice whether you prefer to tour with a guide or just make it a family affair. The tour guide is no extra cost to the entry fee and will add a bit to the experience as they can provide knowledge about the antiques and artifacts located in the mansion.

  • The Concorde Experience

Located at near the Grantley Adams International Airport, you can experience one of the fastest and most technologically advanced planes ever created. You can enjoy learning facts about the plane itself, or you can go a step further and even fly it (virtually of course).

  • Agapey Chocolate Factory

Located in Fontabelle, this is ideal for those with kids or those with a sweet tooth. This guided tour will allow you to learn a few things about chocolate, while enjoying everyone’s favorite part – sampling of the products!

  • Visit a local art gallery

With so many art galleries around the island, you have your pick of what to visit on a rainy day. From Earthworks in St. Thomas to the Gallery of Caribbean Art in Speightstown, you can enjoy the finest in local art at your disposal.

  • Spa Day

Is there a better way to spend a rainy day than being pampered? Find a nice spa on the island and pay a visit and just lie down and relax under that massage, while listening to the rain pour outside. So relaxing.

  • Movie Day at Olympus Theatres

Take a nice drive up to Sheraton Centre Christ Church and take in some movies at the Olympus Theatres. Always showing the latest movies and previewing the movies to come, you can be sure to be comfortable and relaxed while enjoying your movie.

  • Atlantis Submarine Tours

Outside may be wet but there’s no reason no you need to be too. Have an underwater tour with the underwater experience of a lifetime with Atlantis Submarines and you will forget all about how rainy it is above sea level.

For those who do not want to leave your home or hotel…

  • Movie/TV Day

Got a few movies or TV series to catch up on but have not been able to due to your busy schedule? Then what better time to do it than on a rainy day when you are trapped inside. Switch on the TV or just binge watch online. Your day, your choice.

  • Pamper yourself

We mentioned visiting a local spa earlier, but why not pamper yourself in your own way? Do the nails, wash the hair, have a nice warm bubble bath. Take care of you!

  • Board Games with the family

If everyone is trapped inside, persons may tend to get restless and irritable. Channel that pent up energy into a few competitive board games that everyone ca n enjoy.

  • Curl up with a nice book

Many of us have several books on our shelves or downloaded on our tablets or phones but just haven’t gotten around to reading them. Get under the covers in bed and switch on your device (or open that book) and get reading. Remember, “reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are” – Mason Cooley.

  • Online Shopping

Had a huge shopping day planned but the rain played spoilsport? No matter. Most shopping tends to be done online today so why not just get all that you had planned to buy without leaving your home? You might probably even end up saving some dollars.

  • An indoor date with the hubby

The romance doesn’t have to disappear just because it’s a rainy day. Plan a fun day indoors or just a nice romantic snuggle watching some movies and DVDs or engage in…other romantic activities…

  • Exercise

Switch on that DVD or exercise video and workout! You don’t have to skip a day just because you cannot go running outside. What about you who said today was the day you would start exercising but the rains came? This doesn’t have to stop you either. There are many videos online that have many different exercise routines available.

  • Play an instrument (if you have one)

Or learn to play it. There are so many videos online that can teach you the basics of instrument playing. And if you already know how to play, spend the time practising some of your favorite jams.

  • Bake/Cook

Try that new recipe you discovered on the food network that you have always wanted to. Plus, when its rainy, we tend to get hungrier so why not try several things?

Finally, go and play in the rain! You are never too young – or too old –  to just go and get wet. Run around with your family and just liberate yourself. Who says the fun has to be put on hold when the rain comes?
