Festivals & Events - Sweet Soca and Party Monarch Kings Crowned (to be edited)
Bushy Park cam alive yesterday, not with the sounds of high speed vehicles as one would usually expect, but with the sound of soca music of Soca Royale. The Sweet Soca and Party Monarch competition were keenly contested but two men reigned supreme - Biggie Irie and Gorg, respectively.
The crownings of Biggie and Gorg represented two of the more popular decisions in the five years the competitions have been held at Bushy Park. The majority of the estimated 10 000 people waited around for the announcements, which started around 9:26 p.m., and the celebrations started for each when the third placed person was announced and escalated when the second person was called.
In the case of Biggie in particular, there was overwhelming support from all the contestants. One of them even held the car door for him to get into his new vehicle.
It was a case of at last for Biggie after 28 years in entertainment in Barbados. Having tasted victory in the Play Whe Groovy Soca competition in Trinidad and Tobago in 2007 with Nah Going Home,Biggie Irie took his first soca title on local soil yesterday by taking the Sweet Soca title with Pankatang.
The massive syringe Biggie Irie carried in the Sweet Soca competition could have been injected with some of the rum that Gorg could count among the few things his woman left with him to take Bushy Park for his maiden showing in the Party Monarch finals.
