Religion - Roman Catholic Church in Barbados

The Roman Catholic Church found difficulties in establishing in Barbados. At that time, the population was largely Protestant and they initially rejected this new church. It is only in 1838, after the abolition of lavery, that Roman Catholicism became accepted. The following year a Catholic chaplain was requested and received, leading to an increase in numbers. Today, there are seven locations and about four percent of churchgoing Barbadians are Roman Catholic.
