On December 5th, 2013, the world morned the passing of one of the greatest icons the world has ever known and probably will ever know. At the age of 95, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela entered into eternal rest. Mandela, the first black South African president, is an international symbol of peace. His election to presidency came after spending decades imprisoned because of his political beliefs. He would then revolutionize South Africa and guide his country from the apartheid to bring about democracy for all races. His work has echoed across the world as, to this day, he continued to fight for human rights.
Shortly after the announcement of Mandela’s passing, US President Barrack Obama had his to say: “He achieved more than could be expected of any man. Today he’s gone home, and we’ve lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth.”
Nelson Mandela, 1918 – 2013, may be gone but his legacy will live on forever.
