Island News – New Knights

New knights humbled by honour
1/16/2014
By Regina Selman Moore

Prominent attorney-at-law Dr. Sir Trevor Austin Carmichael, K.A., LVO, SCM, Q.C., and pioneer in the field of cardiology and medical education Professor Sir Trevor Austin Hassell, K.A., GCM, MBBS, FRCP, FACC, are truly feeling honoured to be the island’s newest Knights of St. Andrew.

Governor General of Barbados, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave, yesterday conferred the accolade of Knight of St. Andrew, Barbados’ highest honour, on each of the two outstanding sons of the soil, as recipients of the island’s National Independence Honours had their time in the spotlight at the 2013 Presentation of Insignia of the National Honours and Awards ceremony, held at Government House.

Dr. Sir Trevor Austin Carmichael was honoured for his outstanding contribution to the financial services sector, international business law practice and his several exceptional, philanthropic and voluntary activities, while Professor Sir Trevor Austin Hassell, K.A., GCM, MBBS, FRCP, FACC was honoured for his significant contribution to the medical profession, in particular, Cardiology.

Both knights, who share the same first name, noted that they were both pleased and happy to be conferred such an honour for their noteworthy achievements and contributions.

“I just simply wish to say that I feel truly humbled and I want to recognise all of those so many persons who have contributed in one way or another to any small or not so small achievement I have made and this includes my wife and my family and my many professional colleagues and friends,” Hassell, who is married to Lucinda and is the proud father of Yonette, Andrew and Christopher, told members of the media.

“One feels honoured obviously. One feels humble and one feels happy,” Carmichael, who is married to Sharen and is the proud father of one son, Giles, remarked.

“It’s a great honour, but it is one obviously which I share with many people, with my family, my friends, my professional colleagues and I’ve just been very fortunate to have had so many people assist, help me, like me and love me,” Carmichael added.

When asked to point out the high point of his career, Hassell had the following to say.

“My ability to help people in some small way. I truly believe that’s really my raison d’être, to help people and to the extent that I have done that, is the extent to which I feel very pleased and happy and conversely, the extent to which I have not done that, I am saddened. But I’d like to think that those situations where I have not helped, would not be too many” he remarked.

Carmichael on the other hand acknowledged his work in the international business sector, but he also noted smaller highlights.

“For me life is a continuous session of highlights. Every day is a highlight. To get up in the morning and enjoy the beauty of Barbados or wherever it may be is a highlight and within those big highlights, those macro highlights if you will, there are many micro highlights. Yes, it is the international business, but it’s also the pleasures I get in the work which I do for the museum, in the work which I do for the International Council of Museums (in Paris), the National Art Gallery Committee. I enjoy everything that I do and that is my highlight. Enjoyment, total enjoyment. I love it and I want to continue enjoying it and continue contributing however I can and working with all those friends out there who help to make Barbados a better place” he said.
