Prime Minister Mia Mottley has given the medicinal cannabis industry the green light. She highlighted this at the First Caribbean Barbados Client Economic Forum, noting that there would be loads of benefits to the Barbados economy, especially as a cannabis tourism hotspot.
As Barbados is already a popular tourism destination, she spoke of the potential to “extract maximum value by having clinics as well as recuperative villages for people who want to deal with a certain aspect of pain management”. It is expected that the framework will be in place before Christmas.
The new laws will only cover medicinal cannabis and a referendum will be needed as it relates to use of recreational cannabis in the island. PM Mottley indicated that it will plans for this are in the works. Barbados joins other Caribbean islands moving towards the legalisation of medical cannabis.
