Harrison's Cave
Originally discovered over two hundred years ago, Harrison's Cave is a massive stream cave system at least 2.3 kilometres long. Its largest cavern, the Great Hall, measures 15 metres/ 50 feet high. The cave is adorned with a magnificent display of stalactites and stalagmites (which grow by less than the thickness of a piece of paper each year).
Harrison's Cave offers many tours but one of the most popular is an hour long journey by electric tram through the cave network, which stops at strategic points along the way by natural waterfalls for photo opportunities and to allow you to get a true feel for the cave network. And of course the friendly guides keep you well informed along the way.
Harrison's Cave also boast interactive computer interactivity on site, souvenir centers, a magnificent glass elevator to ground zero, which boasts excellent views and a warm and welcoming visitor center.
It is a well-known fact that Harrison's Cave is also connected to another one of the isles natural treasures- Welchmen Hall Gully (formed by the collapsed roofs of caves, rain and erosion). In fact Welchman Hall Gully served as the local entrance to the cave before Harrison's Cave was developed and evidence of stalagmites and stalactites can still be seen in the gully during tours.
PLEASE NOTE: Harrison's Cave is closed to the public on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, 1st Monday in August (Kadooment Day) and Christmas Day only.
The cave is named after Thomas Harrison, who owned most of the land in the area in the early 1700's. Mr. Harrison is aslo credited with the establishment of Harrison College, a prominent secondary school in Barbados. While it is unknown if Mr. Harrison ever entered the cave, it is clear that others did. In the 18th century, there were several attempts to enter Harrison's Cave. Due to the difficulty in reaching the natural entrances and the narrow passages, these attempts were unsuccessful.
Ole Sorensen, an engineer and cave adventurer from Denmark, mapped the cave in 1974, with the assistance of Tony Mason and Allison Thornhill, two young Barbadian men, and the Barbados government developed it to show as an attraction. In 1981 Harrison's Cave was opened to the public. The entrance to the cave was named Boyce Tunnel, in honour of the first member the construction team to break through the bedrock, Noel Boyce.
