Fishing in Barbados
Barbados' cool, warm waters make fishing a very enjoyably pastime on the island. Barbados' oceans are a treasure drove of many exotic fish, including the national flying fish.
Many fishing operators offer reef fishing and deep sea fishing where anglers can reel in fish such as yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dolphin fish (also called "dorado"), Atlantic blue marlin, white marlin, swordfish, Atlantic sailfish, and barracuda.
Many of these operators are located in the aptly named Fisherman's Row, Bridgetown, where visitors can rent a deep sea fishing boat, and test their skills in Barbados' deep waters. Anglers do not have to necessarily travel far for their deep-sea catch, as the Barbados' waters can be as much as 400ft deep less than a mile off the coast.
For those who prefer the shallow waters of inshore fishing, waters close to shore can be as deep as 70ft, very ideal for trolling fishing and bottom fishing.
The Barbados Game Fishing Association (BGFA) was a fishing club established in 1961 by a group of anglers who sought to have organized tournaments guided by the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA). Originally called the Barbados Fishing Club, the BGFA still adheres to the rules and regulations of the IGAF, and is also affiliated with the National Sports Council.
This Association has seen its events schedule expand from 6-8 National One-Day Deep Sea events staged between January and April, to later include a number of inshore night events (5:00 pm to midnight) in open boats fishing for Goggle-eye, Crevalle, Snapper, Sennets and other small inshore fish. The Association also organises several Barracuda and Wahoo Fun events between November and January, from 5.00 a.m. to 12 noon.
Currently, the largest tournament held by the Barbados Game and Fishing Association is the BGFA International Tournament, first started in 1990. Today, it is now known as the Sagicor/Mount Gay Rum International Tournament, and it attracts anglers from all over the world, including North and South America, Europe, U.K. and Canada. This event is also a Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship qualifying event.
The BGFA also has a website which gives up-to-date information on upcoming fishing tournaments and other BGFA related news.
