DIY – Using Household Items to Beautify Your Home

DIY – Using Household Items to Beautify Your Home

With the hard economic times, it is sometimes difficult purchase the items we need to make our house beautiful. However, with the advent of numerous “DIY” (Do it Yourself) blogs, beautifying your home is now not only easier, but more affordable. Here are some simplistic ideas using old things you may usually throw away, that can transform your home.

Cord Organizer

This is ideal for those who have numerous extension cords lying around the house making a royal mess. With the cord organizer, you can take old paper towel rolls that you usually throw away and slip them over the cords to keep them untangled. You can even two toilet paper rolls, and stick them together with some tape. As you know, sometimes on toiler paper and paper towel rolls, dark spots are left behind from the paper, you can use colored tape to cover those areas, and you have your ideal cord organizer.

Pen Holder

If you’re like me and you always lose pens, this is perfect for you. The pen organizer is not only for pens, but it can hold markers, pencils or any stationery that you wish to keep in one place. All you need is several toilet paper rolls and a shoe box and you are good to go. You can decorate the shoe box using decorative paper. Then, fit as many toilet paper rolls into the shoe box as you can. Then you can easily organizer your stationery on each roll, as depicted in the photo below.

Wine Bottle Vases

Instead of throwing out the wine bottles, you can take some yard and twine and create some really nice designs to decorate the bottle. Then, you can fill the bottle with any type of flower you wish. The yarn and twine can be chosen to match your curtains, to make it even more eye-catching. In the picture below, the individual spells out the word love with her yarn design.

Paper Flowers

Real flowers are very expensive and if not cared for properly they tend to die very fast. But why worry your head with the real thing, when you can get something long lasting and cheaper? In the image below, the individual used colored paper (which is ideal as regular paper does not give the same appearance as the colored paper) and created roses from them, attached them to a stem and placed them in a vase. The most difficult thing about this particular DIY task, is the rose creation process.

Rejuvenating old solar lights

For those who garden and use solar lights, you know that they get weathered and cloudy over time. However, it doesn’t mean you have to throw them out. Take some clear nail polish and paint over the solar cells and the solar lights will work as good as new. In fact, they may even be brighter than before.

Book Letter Holder

This is ideal for those who always lose track of important bills and letters. Here’s a step by step guide on how to do it.

  • It is usually recommended to use a small hardcover book, but I choose a soft covered one (more on that later). Take the pages and fold them back, pressing them inward towards the seam.
  • Repeat this task until all of the pages have been used up.
  • I used soft cover book in order to fold back the front and book covers, so that the letter cover will look uniformed.
  • Ideally, it is best to use glue to seal the pages into the seam, but this one held up quite well without glue.

As you can see, there are many ways to use simple items around your home to improve the overall décor. No need to expense yourself with pricey designers or items to beautify your home or make it more organized. DIY is the new way to decorate!
