Barbados National Trust Open House Programme

SugarMuseumSteeped in history, Barbados is a haven of fantastic finds and memories of yesteryear. This history stands tall today in the form of great houses, which were once owned by the richest of the rich, and chattel houses, which were the homes of the poor. Filled with many of the original features and other artefacts of the time, some of these homes, dating as far back as the sixteenth century, can be toured today. For one day a year, many of these homes, including some private ones, open their doors. Through the Barbados National Trust, visitors and locals alike are afforded the opportunity to visit these marvellous structures. This is called the Open House Programme. The programme runs annually from January to March and through it, persons get to learn more about Barbados’ history and architecture. Not only do you get to tour these homes, but the Barbados National Trust turns it into a full spectacle with various displays, lectures and refreshments available.
