Bajan Favourites: Junk Food

Junk food everyone’s guilty pleasure, especially on weekends. After a long week of eating traditional local cuisine, sometimes Bajans enjoy indulging in something a little less Caribbean and a little more junky. We asked a few Bajans about their favourite junk food and here are some of the responses:

  • Burger and Chips

If I could eat burgers and chips every day I would. I have loveddd chips from since I was young and I just like a burger bad, especially with BBQ sauce, Pineapple, tomato, cheese and bacon and of course ketchup for the chips. My favourite burger is definitely the one from Lucky Horseshoe. – Michael

  • Roti

My favorite would have to be a Chicken curry roti with Dhalpourie skin. If I didn’t have acid reflux I would eat that all day every day! I think it’s my favourite because I liked it more than all the foods I ate growing up. Also my family is from Guyana, and dhalpourie and curry is a major part of that culture. My favourite way to eat it the buss up shot. – Suzie

However, most of the persons we spoke to had a similar favourite:

  • Pizza

Why?

Pita Pizza

Pizza tastes so good. The blend between different flavours is tantalising in the right pizza.  – Correy

It’s incredibly delicious! – Andrew

I love cheese and anything Italian. -bRose

So many flavours all in one bite! -bTaurean

The variety. You can make it however you want. It’s great to enjoy with friends as well. Also, pizza is a food that comes with an edible handle (the crust)! What more could anyone want?! -bKemar

Favourite Toppings

Sweet Peppers, Pineapple, Corn and Mincemeat. – Alyssa

Pepperoni, Mincemeat, Pineapple, Sweet Pepper and Onions – Correy

Mincemeat, Pineapple and Cheese – Andrew

Mincemeat, Pineapple, Pepperoni and Corn – Rose

Jalapeno, Pepperoni, Black Olives, Pineapple and Mozzarella cheese – Taurean

Hawaiian Toppings (Ham, Cheese and Pineapple). But if you doing it yourself you need Pineapple, Bacon, Onions, Mincemeat and BBQ chicken – Kemar

Chefette Pizza

Who has the best Pizza in Bim?

Chefette. I love their dough! –Alyssa

Pita Pizza in Grazettes. Their pizza tastes like heaven! – Correy

Chefette – Rose

Il Forno – Taurean

However, one person believed that the best pizza to buy depends on the occasion:

For a work function – Chefette. You can mix it up cuz you can get half with a particular topping and half with another. So it’s perfect for those functions where people have different preferences.

If you are having a lime with friends I would say Chefette of PriceSmart. PriceSmart has a very good pizza. They use mozzarella cheese and they do all different types of pizza (Hawaiian, pepperoni, veg, cheese and a combo slice (with seasoned beef, onions and olives)

For a day out I would say Pita Pizza cuz they have their own different combinations. So it really depends on what you are doing/what your event is. – Kemar

If this small cross section of persons is anything to go buy, it’s pretty obvious most Bajans love Pizza. So if you are tasked with bringing a food item to a party or lime, you cannot go wrong with a box of pizza.
